How Many Sessions for Laser Hair Removal Do You Need?

Permanent hair reduction is a process requiring time and patience. You won’t see results right away, but a consistent treatment schedule will ultimately deliver lasting effects. So, how many sessions for laser hair removal do you need? We cover what you need to know in this comprehensive guide!

How many sessions of laser hair removal will you need?

While hormones and genetics are highly influential in your hair growth cycle, many other factors affect how many laser hair removal treatments you’ll need, including:

Treatment area

Hair grows at different rates depending on where it’s located. While facial hair grows quickly, body hair tends to take more time to pass through each phase of the growth cycle. Here’s a general guide to how many laser hair removal sessions are required for different treatment areas:

  • Upper lip, chin: 6 to 10 treatments

  • Underarms: 6 to 8 treatments

  • Bikini line and Brazilian: 6 to 10 treatments

  • Arms and legs: 6 to 12 treatments

  • Back and chest: 6 to 12 treatments

Keep in mind that occasional touch-ups are required for most people to maintain their results indefinitely.

Hair type

Laser technology relies on melanin, the pigment giving your skin and hair their color. Lasers can easily identify hair with more melanin, so dark, coarse strands may respond best to treatment. On the other hand, these methods don’t usually work well for fine peach fuzz and hair that’s light blonde, gray, or red.

Skin tone

In the past, only clients with light, pasty skin and dark hair could reap the full benefits of laser hair removal, but that’s no longer the case. Our Candela GentleMax Pro laser features dual wavelengths to safely remove hair from a wider range of skin tones.

What happens if you stop laser hair removal?

Life happens, and some interruptions are simply unavoidable. Here’s what you can expect if you stop getting laser hair removal in the middle of your treatment series:

Hair regrowth

After quitting laser treatments early on, you will likely see regrowth return as it did before your first session. While it may seem like you have less hair, the effects are probably temporary.

However, if you’ve already completed four to six treatments, some of the targeted strands will vanish forever. Just remember that your body will keep making new hair follicles, whether or not you complete your treatment series.

Patchy, uneven results

When you stop before completely eradicating all unwanted hair in your chosen treatment area, you will inevitably notice that your hair growth patterns are no longer uniform. You may have sparse patches next to areas of full regrowth, as only some follicles were effectively destroyed.

Lost progress

You won’t pick up right where you left off if you go a significant amount of time between laser hair removal sessions. Folks who stop for a year or more after several appointments will see various levels of regrowth and typically require additional treatments to make up the difference. This will ultimately increase the time you spend in the treatment room and your overall costs.

Why are multiple laser hair removal sessions necessary?

In a perfect world, we could all achieve permanent hair removal with a single visit to our favorite spa. Unfortunately, modern technology isn’t quite there yet. Here’s why a full treatment series is necessary for optimal results:

Not all hair follicles are in the active growth stage

Laser devices target hairs only in the anagen phase of the growth cycle, when strands are actively connected to the follicle. This allows light energy to destroy the root and prevent new hairs from forming. At any given time, only some of your hairs will be in the right stage for effective laser treatment, so multiple sessions are required for effective hair reduction.

Hormonal changes can influence new hair growth

Some hair is more susceptible to hormonal fluctuations, including facial hair and pubic hair. Even after a consistent series of hair removal appointments every four to six weeks, new follicles may appear in these areas at a faster rate, requiring more frequent touch-ups.

Upkeep and maintenance

The hair follicles targeted with your initial treatment series won’t return, but your body will continue generating new ones. Most folks can maintain their results with one or two touch-up sessions per year. As you prepare for these occasional appointments, remember to stay hydrated, avoid sun exposure, and stick to nourishing skincare products to prevent adverse side effects.
